    第二部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的ABCD四个选项中,选出最佳答案。

A

Where did you see a polar bear (北极熊)? At a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These “Polar Bears” are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day, the air temperature was 3℃, and the water temperature was a bit higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements. First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group; this is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.

Doctors do not agree about the medical effects of cold-water swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body's temperature drops so low that finally the heart beat stops. Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter.

The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits of cold-water swimming. They say that their favourite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system(循环系统) because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming.

The main benefits(益处) of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim all the year round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says "When I go into the water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away."

36. Which of the following is NOT necessary for members of the Polar Bear Club?

A. encourage people to take part in cold-water swimming actively

B. point out the possible danger of blood illness during cold-water swimming

C. believe swimming is helpful both in winter and in summer

38.According to the passage, some doctors believe it is true that__________.

A. you are healthy if cold-water swimming turns your skin color blue

B. there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming

C. cold-winter swimming can make the body temperature dangerously high

D. Polar Bears are bears swimming in freezing water

39.The passage is mainly about________.

A. a group of cold-water swimming lovers

B. the Polar Bears' life in New York

In November 1965, New York was blacked out by an electricity failure. The government officials promised that it would not happen again. Pessimists (悲观者) were certain that it would happen again within five years at the latest. In July 1977, there was a repeat performance which produced different degrees of disorder throughout the city of 8,000,000 people. In 1965, the failure happened in the cool autumn and at a time of peace and good situation. In 1977, the failure was much more serious because it came when the number of people out of work was large and the city was suffering from one of its worst heat waves.

In 1965 there was little stealing during the darkness, and fewer than 100 people were caught by the police. In 1977, hundreds of stores were broken into and stolen. They broke shop windows and helped themselves to jewellery, clothes or television sets, nearly 400 people were sent to the police but far more disappeared into the darkness of the night. The number of policemen at hand was far from enough and they were wisely stopped from using their guns against the mobs(暴徒) that were far more than them and that included armed(有武器的) men.

Hospitals had to treat hundreds of people cut by glass from shop windows. Banks and most businesses remained closed the next day. The blackout started at 9:33 p.m., when lightning hit and knocked out vital cables(关键的电缆). Many stores were thus caught by surprise.

The vast majority of New Yorkers, however, tried to help strangers, handed out candles, and tried to get through the dark world without traffic lights, refrigerators, water and electrical power. For 24 hours, New York realized how helpless it was without electricity.

40.In what way was the blackout of 1977 different from that of 1965?

A. There was much more disorder.

B. This time the electricity supply failed.

C. It was quite unexpected.

D. It came in the cool autumn.

41.What caused the blackout in July 1977?

A. The heat waves made people turn on too much electrical equipment.

B. Because many people lost their jobs, some machines were not in proper working order.

C. During the storm, lightning damaged the supply cables.

D. The passage does not tell us.

42. Why did many persons manage to escape the police?

A. The police could not see them in the darkness.

B. Many of them carried guns.

C. There were not enough policemen to catch them all.

D. They were hidden inside big buildings.

43.The 1977 New York electricity failure lasted_________

A. a whole week B. twenty-four hours

C. three days D. a whole night

Zinc () is one of about 20 elements necessary for good health. It is present in the body in a very small amount, but it makes it possible for important chemical actions to be carried out in cells. Scientists are just beginning to discover how zinc and other elements work.

Researchers first studied zinc as a way to speed recovery. Dr. Waltor Powys, formerly with the United States Air Force, noted that the laboratory animals recovered faster when some matters were added to their food. One of these matters was zinc. Dr. Powys later tested the zinc treatment on an American airman recovering from medical operations. The airman who received zinc sulphate (硫酸盐) recovered in half of the usual time. Other doctors studied persons who had a number of strange disorders. The doctors learned that all of these problems were caused by lack of zinc in the body. They treated these disorders successfully by giving the patients zinc sulphate.

The amount of zinc in the body can be found by examining blood and hair. A lack of this important element is not uncommon among people in both industrial and developing countries. Zinc is found in most high protein (蛋白质) foods, such as meat milk, fish and eggs. It is also found in whole grains. But many people do not eat enough of these foods. Food markets should add these elements so that more people could get needed amount of these necessary matters.

44.   Which of the following statements is true?

A.    Scientists found how zinc works a long time ago.

B.    People need a large amount of zinc to be healthy.

C.    Zinc allows important chemical actions to take place in cells.

D.    Zinc must be used in the course of medical operation.

45.   One of the results from the study of zinc is that _________.

A.    there's only a little zinc in the human body

B.    food rich in protein contains more zinc

C.    some physical problems are caused by lack of zinc

D.    any patient who receives zinc sulphate gets well immediately

46.   The best title for the passage may be ________.

A.   A New Discovery     B. Zinc and Health   C.    How Zinc Works    D. Add Zinc to Your Food

Americans are proud of their variety and individuality (个性), yet they love and respect few things more than a uniform, whether it is the uniform of a lift operator or the uniform of a five-star general. Why are uniforms so popular in the United States?

Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more professional than civilian (百姓的) clothes. People have become conditioned to expect higher quality from a man who wears a uniform. The television repairman who wears a uniform is likely to inspire more trust than one who appears in civilian clothes. Faith in the skill of a garage mechanic is increased by a uniform. What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a hairdresser, or a waiter to lose professional identity (职业身份) than to step out of uniform?

Uniforms also have many practical good points. They are often more comfortable and more lasting than civilian clothes.

Primary among the argument against uniforms is their lack of variety and the loss of individuality experienced by people who must wear them. Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular type is generally stuck with it, without change, until retirement. When people look alike, they are likely to think, speak, and act similarly on the job at least.

Uniforms also give rise to some practical problems. Though they are long-lasting, often their initial expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also expensive to maintain, requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering possible with many types of civilian clothes.

47.   What surprises us is that Americans _______.

A.    still judge a man by his clothes   B.      think highly of uniforms

C.    less prefer wearing civilian clothes  D. respect a lift operator in uniform

48.   People are likely to think that a man in uniform ________.

A.    suggests quality work   B.    shows his social position

C.    appears to he more practical   D.  looks more fresh and attractive

49.   Those who are against uniforms believe that people wearing uniforms ______.

A. are usually helpful                                  B. have little freedom       C. lose personal character   D. enjoy greater popularity

50.   It can be concluded from the passage that ________.

A.    people generally trust a person in uniform B.       people enjoy wearing comfortable uniform

C.    the cost of the uniform is acceptable to people D.       people wear uniforms to show their professions

51.   The underlined sentence tells us that ________.

A.    it's impossible for people with jobs to lose their identity

B.    people's identity can be recognized more easily by their uniforms

C.    nurses and policemen must wear uniforms when working

D.    people in those professions act in an easier way without uniforms

Much has been written about Lincoln’s unhappy married life. But his marriage was no worse than that of others. Mary was not one of those bad-tempered, sharp-tongued women who are always complaining. She was a good wife and a good mother, who loved her husband and her children. They had fights——what married couple does not? Mary’s nerves were often on edge(崩溃的边缘), she was easily hurt by a careless word and had no sense of humor. But she was always true and loyal(忠实的) to her husband.

Her sense of values was not like his. When she first came to Washington she thought that if she dressed well and gave fine parties she would build for herself a circle of friends with herself at the center. Without Lincoln’s knowledge she spent a great amount of money on clothes and ran up a huge debt that was to worry him for many years to come. But even if she had been different she would not have been able to win the Washington ladies to her side. Those with Southern sympathies(同情) looked down upon her because although she was herself a Southerner, she had turned against the south, while those who held up the Northern failed to trust her because there were stories that she was a Southern spy.

52Which is the best title for the passage?

       ALincoln’s Marriage                               BUnhappy Marriage

       CLincoln’s Choice of Wife                      DMary’s Virtues(美德)

53In this passage, the writer tries to explain that Mary was            .

       Aa bad-tempered wife

       Bsharp-tongued

Cin a difficult position in Washington

Dwas able to win the  ladies’ favor(青睐) in Washington

54Judging from the passage, the writer’s attitude towards Mary was            .

       Alove                    Bsympathy            Canger

55Which of the following is true according to the passage?

AMary came from the North while most of the Washington ladies from the South.

BThe marriage between Lincoln and his wife was not always a peaceful one.

CMary held parties in order to throw Lincoln in debt.

DIf she had not held parties and thrown herself in debt she would have won the Washington ladies’ favor.
